File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used by mainly web developers to add or remove files of varying extensions over a TCP/IP network, such as the internet. FTP is utilized at the client’s end, which is yourself. It allows for data to be swapped from the client’s IP to that of any server it connects to. Without FTP you will not be able to manage transfers of your brand from your PC, to your hosting. FTP can be and will be utilized to set up both static and dynamic websites within the guide.

An example is if you are to have two folders side by side on your screen, one is your document’s on your PC, the other is a folder on your hosting somewhere around the world. FTP will allow for the two folder’s to swap file’s either way. Positioning of each file or folder is mandatory for the workings of your hosting and website. For this part, you will require either a browser based FTP (Addon) or a stand alone FTP program.

Under open source, you will be learning about content management systems which use FTP less often as you can rely more on the back end(administrators) user interface within your chosen open source Content Management software.
