TweetIf you lost your password to someone, you have a security issue on your hands. This is unlikely to happen though, if your passwords are extra strong throughout your registrations. With any content management system or other blogging platform, people are able to respond to the content with their own reply or via other methods. Bots can navigate websites and put in spam information across the internet, Akismet comes in here, it pings all blogs and has a database of known spam IP’s, if one comments on your blog or website, your security should see and understand what it is and not allow it to post to your website. In your administrator panel, Akismet will show you the spam comments that have been made, delete these accordingly.
I bring up Akismet to show you how to get a WordPress.com API Key. With this, you have told WordPress your running a blog and also allowing you to use many plugins that need a key to get stats and other useful bits of information.
With a standard install of WordPress, two plugins will be installed along with it. Akismet comes as standard, as does Hello Dolly. You have no need for Dolly so delete this plugin straight away, then we can move on with installing and setting up Akismet for your comment security.
Delete the files, you will be asked for your FTP details to make sure that WordPress can configure the job for you without you having to leave the user interface.
Back in the ‘Installed Plugins’ page, on Akismet you should see the link to get a WordPress API key. Click on it or head to wordpress.com.
When you are there, sign up with your band name, password and usual admin@ email address.
When filling out the information, the last piece will be whether you wish to have a free blog hosted by them or a username, opt for the username.
Go to your email and confirm the account so that you can log in and copy your API key for later use.
Now it is active, log in at the top of the site.
When in your admin panel, click on your username. This will edit the main features of it and show you your API key.
Follow this link to get to it.
Now you have registered, logged in and copied your API key, you are now ready to Activate Akismet from the Installed Plugin section part of your blog.
A message will appear at the top of the page asking you to enter the key.
Paste it in to the form provided, it should turn green to show you that it has been successful.
When you log in now, one of the first things you will notice is the column containing the post count and comment count, page count etc. If you see comments increase dramatically, you may not notice it on the front end as Akismet have stopped them from posting. There are logs of spam content which is being forced on to sites by spam bots and a section where you can delete in bulk, just follow the comment stats to their own page.
